Contents
This course will focus on both theoretical and practical aspects of the valency theory. It will first deal with the origins of the theory, then discuss its potential followed by its application to various fields of linguistics (e.g. first language acquisition, foreign language teaching, lexicography). Some of the various questions to come up throughout the course are: Is valency a purely syntactic phenomenon? Can it combine with argument structure constructions? What is the role of valency in students' error analysis? Does valency allow for comparisons across languages? Where could one get information about the valency properties of lexical units? Corpora? Dictionaries? How do children learn valency patterns and constructions? As far as the practical aspect is concerned, the developed expertise will help students successfully use the valency-based model of syntactic analysis - ISAAVA. Students will find further practical application of the valency theory, which will consist in writing valency dictionary entries as proposed by the Valency Dictionary of English (Herbst, Heath, Roe & Götz, 2004).
