Inhalt
This course will begin with a revision of basic topics in the theory of nucleation, growth and electrostatic stabilization of particulate materials (covered by Grenzflächen in der Verfahrenstechnik - CBI-DG-G8/CBI-BAG-B8 or Basics in Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology - MAP-O 1). Following this the challenges and solutions to the problem of metal, oxide and semiconductor particle synthesis will be discussed. The use of polymeric materials is very important in the industrial application of particle technologies and following an introduction to these materials their stabilizing value will be demonstrated.
The second half of the course will concern the characterisation, properties and application of disperse systems. In addition to understanding the measurement of particle and agglomerate size and shape, the factors affecting the electronic, magnetic, optical and catalytic properties will be covered. Particles are often applied as part of a hierarchical system e.g. in a device, functional coating, drug delivery system. The use of self-assembly and printing/patterning techniques to achieve these goals will be presented with reference to work carried out within the Erlangen Cluster of Excellence “Engineering of Advanced Materials – Hierarchical Structure Formation for Functional Devices”.
In place of tutorials (Übungen) participants of the course will be required to undertake a “miniproject” in which a specific area of research into disperse systems will be explored and presented. The topics offered will also allow some interaction with active researchers in Erlangen as well as an opportunity to develop bibliographic search, teamwork and presentation skills.
The language of instruction will be English and the course will be lectured by postdoctoral researchers from the Institute of Particle Technology (Lehrstuhl für Feststoff- und Grenzflächenverfahrenstechnik), each providing an insight into their different areas of research.
