- Dieser Kurs wird via Zoom mit interaktiven Elementen unterrichtet. Der Leistungsnachweis wird über die erfolgreiche Teilnahme an einer Abschlussklausur erworben. Die Abschlussklausur kann in englischer oder deutscher Sprache abgelegt werden. Die Veranstaltung ist Teil des Moduls Menschenrechte. Der Abschluss des Moduls erfordert die erfolgreiche Teilnahme an einem zweiten Kurs des Moduls, angeboten von den Professoren Bielefeldt und Krennerich. - Inhalt
- This class explores human rights claims as a political phenomenon. Who invokes human rights and why? Why are human rights contested, and what are different forms of contestation? We will cover transnational human rights advocacy and the role that different actors have played in shaping human rights regimes. We will ask why states ratify human rights treaties, and why states do or do not comply with treaty obligations. Drawing on social science literature and taking a critical look at the empirical data that informs this literature, we will explore where and why human rights violations occur. Select historical and contemporary case studies will help us understand that the implementation of human rights is an inherently political process, which involves interpretation, adaptation to local circumstances and confrontation with prevailing power structures. The class curriculum involves a number of interactive exercises; active participation and debate is encouraged.
