Inhalt
Aim and focus of the seminar is to shed some light on different understandings of how ‘Zionism’ is understood: For some it is a Jewish nationalist movement (even though there are quite a lot different streams within that camp), others see Zionism as a colonialist enterprise, the UN labelled it for some years even as racism and likened it to South Africa’s Apartheid regime. But even within Judaism the concept is not undebated: Antizionist Ultra-Orthodox like the Neturei Charta deny its legitimacy and blame it even (at least partly) for the Holocaust; other Jewish streams within Israel call for a ‘Post-Zionism’ and try to deconstruct what they perceive to be false founding myths.
In the seminar we will approach the topic on different planes: theoretical (especially through the lens of theories of nationalism and colonialism), historical and factual. We will look at circumstances of the emergence of the Zionist idea, ask how it relates to Judaism and see different variations of Zionist claims and ideas. Afterwards we will review and analyze the different claims about the nature of Zionism.
