Topic
While globalization mainly is a standardizing program, the comparison issue in transculturality has become more and more important. But to compare cultural values we have to take for granted that there exist well defined values which represent the particular culture. Unfortunately, as Richard Rorty shows in his book Contingency, irony, and solidarity (1989), there is a lack of exactly such values. Society is not based on truth but on a contingent consensus. Hence the mentioned issue of comparing (cultural) values is not decidable in an epistemological sense. Instead, in a pragmatic sense and based on the criterion of purposiveness it is still possible to decide. But as Rorty explains, for this one has to become a liberal ironist.
