This course explores perceptions of school students from a different perspective: A major topic is perceptual biases that can impede positive student-student and student-teacher relationships. We will look into the social psychology of the classroom and consider responses to culture. Literature on racial identity and ethnic identity, cultural ecological theory, and stereotype threat are reviewed in relation to academic achievement and achievement differences among racial and ethnic groups. Providing an unique perspective, a specific German view reveals how race and ethnicity can influence the academic and social identities of school students with an immigrant background. Course participants will research one topic and organize a 20 minute presentation in English or German. This course gives you an opportunity to discuss topics and issues in a small group.
