- Every decent, and sane, person ought to hate the hipster. The term “hipster” has an almost exclusively negative connotation. At the same time, “hipster” is a truly protean and amorphous term. The same can be said about the term “bohemia”. Does it only refer to unbearably pretentious, and constantly intoxicated, wannabe artists in places such as Williamsburg, Brooklyn, or Silver Lake, Los Angeles? Or is there more to this term? In this seminar, we will seek to clarify the implications of these two terms. We will read theoretical texts discussing bohemia and hipsterism, and we will also look at literary representations of the bohemian and the hipster.
