Contents
Beginning with early texts that address issues of pedagogy and self-improvement, such as the New England Primer and Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography, we will trace how discourses of individual development, learning, and techniques of (self-)improvement evolve historically. For 20th and 21st century we will focus on the genre of the campus novel to discuss how discourses of individualism and issues of class, gender, and race intersect in the changing social microcosm of college life and the academe.

Recommended literature
Please acquire and read: F.S. Fitzgerald This Side of Paradise; Mary McCarthy The Groves of Academe; John Williams Stoner; Philip Roth The Human Stain
Additional texts will be made available on StudOn. Please note that this class has a “no screen”-policy and that you will thus need to acquire paper editions!
