- What if Germany and Japan had won World War II? What if the Apache had successfully fought European settler colonialism? What if the South had prevailed over the North in the Civil War? These and similar questions have inspired many alternate history narratives and even instigated a field of imaginative or speculative history. At the same time, a corpus of historiographical texts has emerged that tells the history of the US from perspectives other than the usual euro- or anglocentric one. By drawing on a broad range of ‘texts’, we will analyze how such alternate histories engage with and counter the master narrative of western historiography. How do these “micronarratives” (re-)shape our understanding of the United States? To what extent do they challenge or (re-)appropriate foundational myths? How do they (re-)negotiate the fact/fiction dichotomy? These are some of the questions we will focus on in this class.
