- Das Hauptseminar gehört in den folgenden Studiengängen jeweils zu folgenden Modulen:

- The debate on how the history of SF should be narrated has raged on for decades and no consensus has been reached. Commentators theorized that the genre started in antiquity with Euripides or Plutarch, in early modernity with Godwin or De Bergerac, or in classical modernity with Shelly, Verne, Poe, or Wells. Others argued fiercely that these theories were “pedagogic snobbery” and were unlikely to be correct, because the term ‘science fiction’ was only coined in the 1920s. In this course, we will discuss, examine, interrogate and contest several of these histories. Departing from the coinage of the term ‘SF’ in the US American pulp magazine Amazing Stories, we will see how the intention to charge the genre with cultural capital could lead to a Eurocentric theory of SF’s history. We discuss how the genre’s history was subsequently linked to imperialism and anti-imperialism, and we will examine several ‘counter histories’, with a particular focus on postcolonial and feminist perspectives. To do so, we rely on theoretical interventions as well as on a large selection of fictional works (short stories, novellas, novels).
