- Inhalt
- During the nineteenth century, Britain witnessed a staggering growth of cities. The expansion of urban areas was accompanied by drastic social and cultural changes. In this seminar we will examine a wide range of literary and cultural texts and analyse how they represent and imagine urban life in Victorian Britain. We will study nineteenth-century discourses of class and gender in conjunction with issues such as industrialization (particularly developments in Manchester), street life in London (e.g. in Henry Mayhew’s London Labour and the London Poor), and various phenomena of consumer culture (such as the Great Exhibition and the emergence of large department stores). In the process, we will pay close attention to the significance of different literary modes, such as fantasy or realism, and explore the critical potential of concepts such as myth and popular culture.
Students wishing to take this course are expected to acquire and read Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol and Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South before the beginning of the semester. Further, all participants will be required to regularly prepare for class and enroll for a short oral presentation. A course syllabus, a bibliography and additional material will be made available online at the beginning of the semester.
