- The aim of this seminar is to explore forms of Victorian fiction which remain among the most popular today: ghost stories, gothic fiction, detective novels and fairy tales. We will place individual texts in their literary context within the historical development of narrative genres (and overlaps between subgenres, e.g. detective fiction and urban gothic) and within contemporary cultural discourses (e.g. technological and scientific ‘progress’, criminology, ‘degeneration’, ‘deviant’ sexualities and ‘Britishness’). We will also examine how the texts have been recreated in modern film and transformed into popular myths.
It is essential that all students read and reflect upon the texts before each class. All participants should enrol for a short oral presentation before the beginning of term (see the list in our library, C 603); all B.A. and M.A. students are expected to participate in the Independent Study Group. A class schedule and a bibliography will be made available online.
