- The bicentenery of Charlotte Brontë in (April) 2016 makes it fitting for us to take a closer look at the works and afterlife of ‘the Brontës’ – with a particular focus on Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. These novels are among the best-known in English literature and continue to enjoy popularity today (in the form of both books and movies). We will analyse and interpret the texts in class, paying special attention to their place in literary history and their status in contemporary criticism. This seminar will also consider some of the film adaptations and go on to examine the construction of the Brontës as enigmatic figures and cultural icons – a process which started with Elizabeth Gaskell’s biography of Charlotte Brontë (1857) and was perpetuated in (Hollywood) biopics and by the (British) Tourist industry. Topics to be discussed will include: realism and fantasy, gender and genre, the literary canon and popular culture, processes of mythification, concepts of authorship and ‘the woman writer’, the semiotics of tourism and British ‘heritage’.
It is essential that all students read and reflect upon the texts before each class. All participants are expected to enroll for a short oral presentation. A course syllabus, a bibliography and additional material will be made available online at the beginning of the semester.
