Inhalt
Social class, ‘race’ and gender dynamics have been read as sites of conflict in Shakespeare’s plays and in early modern culture; revisions and adaptations of Shakespeare in late modern culture invite new readings of ideology, desire and power. The discussion in this seminar will have a double focus, allowing us to concentrate on Shakespeare’s texts and their historical contexts as well as on (post)modern appropriations of Shakespeare (including Shakespeare’s circulation within popular culture). – All participants should enrol for a short oral presentation before the beginning of term (see the list in our library, C 603); all B.A. and M.A. students are expected to participate in the Independent Study Group. A class schedule and a bibliography will be made available online.

Empfohlene Literatur
Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado about Nothing, Othello (Arden Editions); films: Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet (Luhrmann); Much Ado (Branagh);- optional: Shakespeare in Love (Madden); Omkara (Bharadwaj).
