- Inhalt
- Semantics is concerned with the meaning of words and is one of the oldest branches of linguistics, having started in the early 19th century. Linguistics has since then brought about many different theories of semantics, ranging from structuralist semantics (e.g. feature semantics) to cognitive semantics (e.g. prototype theory). The aim of this seminar is to explore these different theories and revise basic semantic concepts by reading Geeraert’s recent publication and a few other articles. Semantic analyses and exercises are going to round off the course. Participants are expected to participate actively in the seminar and to do a certain amount of weekly reading. The basis of the seminar is the following publication by Geeraerts, which participants are supposed to have purchased BEFORE the beginning of the semester: Geeraerts, Dirk. 2010. Theories of Lexical Semantics. Oxford: Oxford University Press.
