Scheinerwerb: Referat + Hausarbeit

• What your language gives away about your regional, social, educational background.

• Do some people have a superior competence of English than others? (Bernstein's theory of a language deficit vs. Trudgill's difference hypothesis)

• Educational issues

• How people accommodate to other people's speech.

• How accommodation may lead to language change.

Linguistic issues such as:

• The emergence of Standard English

• Why it was so important in Britain to speak and RP and why it no longer is

• Media language in Britain and the US

• Differences between accents and dialects in the UK and the US: phonetics/phonology, morphology, grammar etc.
  

Participants are expected to be acquainted with the terminology, facts and theories that are taught in the Basismodul.
Topics for seminar papers will be available in the first session of the seminar.
