Inhalt
The discovery in 2004 of graphene, an atomically thin layer of carbon, has led to a resurgence of low dimensional solid state physics. This material, of course, should in principle not exist: two dimensional films are predicted by a theorem due to Landau to crumple. While it's existence is remarkable in itself, the electronic properties of this two dimensional material are more remarkable still. In the low energy regime graphene's quasiparticles are governed by an effective two dimensional Dirac-Weyl equation, offering a striking bridge between solid state physics and quantum electro-dynamics. By now, there exists a veritable zoo of "graphene based systems" among the most interesting of which are the few layer graphene systems and epitaxial graphenes, which are simply systems of one or more graphene layers stacked on top of each other and on some substrate (SiC for example). This course we explore the interesting physics of these graphene based systems, treating both single-particle physics (i.e., band physics) and many-body physics
