Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
The class will consist of two hours of lecture (10-12 on Mondays) and two hours of practical exercises (2-4 on Mondays) using Matlab to investigate numerical solutions. The first class session will be May 9, 2016. The last class session will be June 27, 2016.

This class will address theory and application of the Navier-Stokes equations for modeling physical processes in lakes, estuaries, and coastal seas. The underlying problem for such models is the disparity between practical modeling at coarse spatial and time scales compared to the fine-scale continuum basis over which the equations are derived and formally valid. The upscaling process results in what is formally known as the turbulence closure problem, but includes a host of broader issues that are affected by choice of modeling approximations (e.g. hydrostaticity), choice of numerical methods, and effects of the artificiality/uncertainty associated with representing boundary conditions.
