Inhalt:

Das Hauptseminar dient der Darstellung und Diskussion von Problemen der Interkulturalität und vermittelt die Fähigkeit, Theorietexte zu analysieren, theoretische und methodische Grundprobleme zu erfassen und zu beurteilen sowie einen sicheren Umgang mit der Terminologie zu entwickeln. Dabei werden der Kulturbegriff generell als auch verschiedene Theorien zu Multi-, Inter- oder Transkulturalität sowie Schlüsselkonzepte und -begriffe der Interkulturalität untersucht und evaluiert (z.B. Alterität, Hybridität, Stereotyp, Repräsentation, Habitus). Das Seminar hat eine vorwiegend theoretische Ausrichtung, jedoch werden die Theorien und Konzepte immer auch an literarischen Texten und kulturellen Objekten erprobt und diskutiert. Die Textgrundlagen werden zu Beginn des Semesters auf StudOn verfügbar gemacht.

Inhalt:

We will look at various conspiracy theories since the late 18th century - but not in terms of whether they are 'true' or 'false'. Rather, we will enquire into the cultural work that they do (how they affect culture and society?) and approach them with symptomal readings (i.e. consider them as symptoms of more fundamental anxieties, fears or desires). Topics include writings on the French Revolution, Shakespeare conspiracies, Paranoia Movies since the 1970s, British TV (the BBC's Edge of Darkness, a key television series of the 1980s) plus some contemporary conspiracy theories. Inhalt:

As one of the defining discourses of our time, climate change is a central topic negotiated in literature and culture. The debate is frequently complicated by an established binary between 'nature' and 'culture' that relies on an inbuilt gender bias. In this seminar, we are going to explore the genre of ecogothic literature and culture with a particular focus on the gender discourses negotiated in the field. Students can engage in research groups on several topic clusters (e.g. theory with a particular emphasis on ecological feminism; the gothic and the ecogothic as gendered discourses; celebrity culture, e.g. the public personae of Al Gore or Greta Thunberg; close literary and cultural analysis of primary material; theory and activism). Apart from documentaries and films such as Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth (2006), The Guardians of the Earth (2017) or Roland Emmerich's The Day After Tomorrow (2004), we'll analyse novels such as Maggie Gee's The Ice People (1998), John Burnside's Glister (2008) and the novella "Pterodactyl, Puran Sahay, and Pirtha" (1992) by Mahasweta Devi. After the seminar, students will have acquired a thorough overview of central approaches in the field of the environmental humanities and their interconnection with gender discourses.

Inhalt:

In this seminar we will study various aspects of mobility in British literature and culture. We will distinguish forms of tourism, travelling, and migration. What functions does tourism have? How are women represented within travel literature and culture? What functions do the 'other', the countries, food and bodies have? How are (diasporic) identities constructed by migration? Our material will range from literary (texts by early travellers of the British Empire as well as by twentieth century 'Black British writers') to visual examples (such as e.g. advertisements). We will study mobility in British culture from the nineteenth until the twenty first century by studying questions of identity within urban culture, the diaspora and (post)modern travel writings.
Our reading will include excerpts from Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897) as well as the novels The Final Passage (1985) by Caryl Philipps and Bernardine Evaristo's Lara (2009).
Due to the pandemic this course will take place online. Please prepare the reading in advance.

Inhalt:

In this seminar, we will take a closer look at the formulas, theories, contexts, and afterlives of a genre of popular fiction that thrived in Britain in the 1860s and 1870s: sensation fiction. With its racy and melodramatic plots surrounding murder, adultery, insanity, fraud, and other controversial topics that destablised conventional Victorian morality, the sensation novel is often seen as a subversive counterpart to the 'respectable' realist novel that you may have encountered in your previous seminars. We will discuss important precursors of the sensation novel (e.g. the Newgate novel and the Gothic), consider the manifold shifts in the publishing industry that led to the proliferation and distinct marketing of the genre, analyse prototypical and lesser-known examples of sensation fiction, and finally examine its presence in neo-Victorian culture and literature. Among the literary works that we will discuss in the seminar are Wilkie Collins's The Woman in White (1860) and Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret (1862). The seminar requires a comparatively heavy reading load - please only join the seminar if you do not mind 'bulky books'.
Please note that this seminar will be taught online only. Most weeks will consist of synchronous sessions on Zoom in combination with some asynchronous learning activities on StudOn.

Inhalt:

The Victorian period, a period of enormous economic, political, social, technological, scientific, artistic and literary innovation and change, is a rich period for research. We will explore the diverse facets of nineteenth-century British culture with a view to developing a historical framework and research methodology for advanced cultural studies. Accordingly, this seminar will focus on a number of different concepts and theoretical positions that can comprise (Victorian) cultural studies and pervade culturally informed readings of Victorian texts.

Inhalt:

Die Vorlesung ist für Studierende im Hauptstudium konzipiert und bietet vertieftes kanonisches Wissen im Bereich zentraler Epochen der englischen Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte. Hier werden literarisch-kulturelle Umbrüche in der Romantik und die wichtigsten Entwicklungstendenzen im Viktorianismus vorgestellt. Neben kanonischen literarischen Texten liegt dabei ein weiterer Schwerpunkt auf Aspekten, die bis heute kulturell relevant sind, so z.B. Film-Adaptionen, populäre Mythen, Repräsentationen von Klassenkonflikten und Konsumkultur sowie Sexualitäts- oder Geschlechterdebatten. Die Vorlesung kann als Vorbereitung auf die Klausur im Staatsexamen ('Körbchen-Themen') sowie als Anregung für vertiefende literatur- oder kulturwissenschaftliche Studien bzw. Abschlussarbeiten dienen. Eine Übersicht über den Verlauf der Vorlesung wird auf StudOn zur Verfügung gestellt werden.

For Master Students: The lecture contextualizes some of the aspects discussed in the introductory MA-Seminar on Victorian culture. It provides examples of cultural analysis as a critical practice focusing on the key concepts of cultural studies; it also examines the close connection between literary texts and the material, social and ideological dimensions of culture. Please note that not all of the lecture sessions are obligatory; further information will be provided via StudOn.
