Advanced Writing and Area Studies [SZEAOAW]

Dozent/in:
Liz Nicholson
Angaben:
Übung, 2 SWS, ECTS: 3, nur Fachstudium
Termine:
Mi, 12:15 - 13:45, KH 2.019
ab 19.10.2011
Inhalt:
The principal aim of this course is to heighten your awareness of a range of writing skills and to enable you to express your ideas and arguments effectively in written English. Whilst we will not do any Landeskunde as such in the AWAS course, source material pertaining primarily to various issues, news reports, events etc. in the English-speaking world, will serve as a stimulus for a variety of writing-skills practice. By the end of the semester, you should have developed a good set of guidelines on how to approach a wide range of writing tasks. In the early stages of the course, you will be asked to write parts of essays, for example, outlines, openings, conclusions, and different types of paragraphs. These tasks will include compare and contrast, argumentative, cause and effect, charts and graphs, as well as cartoon interpretation writing-skills practice. Once we have completed this instructional phase of the course, you will be required to write full-length assignments. All of your written assignments, including drafts, should be kept in a portfolio so that you can keep track of your progress throughout the course. Your final grade will be the best of three graded written assignments.

Phonetics 2 is a 45-minute course which acts as sequel to the theory lecture (Phonetics 1). As the title suggests, it focuses on the kinds of errors commonly made by German speakers of English, and how to overcome them. Students are confronted with recordings ranging from a strong German accent displaying all the typical pronunciation problems, up to the performance of very advanced learners. Attention is spent on making transparent the criteria of accent evaluation, both for the students' own performances as well as for the assessment of their future pupils. The course also attempts to foster a basic awareness of non-standard features of native English, which enhances the students' listening comprehension and helps them to put the characteristics of Standard English pronunciation (GA and RP) even more into focus.

Phonetics 2 is a 45-minute course which acts as sequel to the theory lecture (Phonetics 1). As the title suggests, it focuses on the kinds of errors commonly made by German speakers of English, and how to overcome them.
